Step 01

Step 01: We admitted we were powerless over alcohol — that our lives had become unmanageable.

This is where it all began. Let me correct that; step 1 is where I finally came to grasp and wrestle with the idea that I was powerless over alcohol and that my life had become unmanageable. It took me about 2 years to get it right. First, I went to a meeting with a friend; then I went to some meetings while I was living with a girlfriend – she convinced me that I was drinking too much.

As some time passed, I went into a treatment center for about 5 days (the extent my insurance would pay) while living with the same girlfriend, then another treatment center for an even shorter period of time (over a weekend).

While in both rehabilitation instances, I didn’t spend much time inhouse, I was enrolled at both of these stays into intensive outpatient care programs. Although neither instance of outpatient treatment got me sober, i would be remiss to say they weren’t critical to my getting sober. As I see it, every single forward movement in my effort (and the efforts of others) were necessary and absolutely played an integral role in the miracle of my sobriety (recovery).
